Sgt Pepper drum beats pop memorabilia record

The hand-painted drumskin shown on the cover of The Beatles’ 1967 album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” fetched £541,250 at Christie’s in London.

A private collector paid more than four times the expected price for the centrepiece of the cover, designed by Peter Blake. The price is a record for a piece of pop memorabilia not including lyrics.

Two guitars that survived Pete Townshend’s instrument-smashing era with The Who fetched more than £46,000 between them.

A pair of candy-striped flares worn by Jimi Hendrix in 1967 fetched £20,000, and

one of his amplifiers made £25,000.
